Goodhue County Sergeant Recognized for Training Excellence
Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Matt Hayen was honored Feb. 3 at the Board of Commissioners meeting for his outstanding work as training sergeant.
Sheriff Marty Kelly praised Hayen after quoting a message from the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), which noted Goodhue County was the only agency out of 396 statewide where every officer up for license renewal had completed all required courses.
The Sheriff’s Office has 47 licensed officers who must complete 16 courses every three years, plus annual training, to maintain certification.
“This accomplishment does not happen by accident,” Kelly said. Addressing Hayen, he added: “Your attention to detail, proactive approach and consistent follow-through ensure our staff remain compliant, well-trained and at the forefront of professional standards.”
Hayen, with the department for three years and focused on training for the last two, said the role suits him. “I’m very detail oriented and I like to stay busy,” he said. Hayen and several colleagues also serve as POST instructors. “Our goal is to set the standard and be an example for other agencies.”
Board members congratulated Hayen, with District 5 Commissioner and Chair Susan Betcher sharing, “It’s a delight for the board to hear this. And we want to thank you.” Adding, “We are lucky to have you.”
