Medical Assistance (Minnesota’s Medicaid program) and MinnesotaCare enrollees must have their eligibility reviewed once a year to ensure they still qualify for insurance. This process is called a renewal.
Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is offering one-way text messages for people enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA), MinnesotaCare, The Minnesota Family Planning Program, and Medicare Savings Programs.

Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare Deadlines Extended
Through January 2024, Minnesotans on Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare who need extra time and support will have an additional month to turn in their renewal paperwork. The extension will help prevent renewal paperwork issues that cause eligible enrollees to lose their health insurance and, with it, their access to health care and prescription medicine.
- If the previous deadline to renew coverage was Aug. 31, 2023, the new date is Sept. 30, 2023.
- If the previous deadline to renew coverage was Sept. 30, 2023, the new date is Oct. 31, 2023.
- If the previous deadline to renew coverage was Oct. 31, 2023, the new date is Nov. 30, 2023.
- If the previous deadline to renew coverage was Nov. 30, 2023, the new date is Dec. 31, 2023.
- If the previous deadline to renew coverage was Dec. 31, 2023, the new date is Jan. 31, 2024.
People are still urged to send in their renewal forms and any required documentation as soon as possible to keep insurance coverage.
Renewals for enrollees take place based on the anniversary month of your application for coverage.
Example:
If you applied for Medical Assistance in July, you have a July Medical Assistance renewal. If you are still eligible for coverage, your renewal paperwork will need to be completed, submitted, and processed by your county or tribe by June 30 for your coverage to continue on July 1.
What to expect and do:
- You will receive a pre-renewal notice in the mail about 2-3 months before the anniversary of your enrollment date to let you know your renewal packet will be coming soon.
- You will receive a renewal packet in the mail 1-2 months before your renewal is due. Inside the renewal packet you’ll find a cover letter with instructions and a due date. You must complete the enclosed renewal form and return it with all the needed proofs by the due date. Eligibility will then be determined.
- You can find your renewal month on the Department of Human Services website and enter your case number or member number. (The case number can be found on your printed notices or premium bills, and the member number can be found on your Minnesota Health Care Program card.) If you're not sure of your case number, you can call your County or Tribal worker.
