Parking to shift at Government Center starting Sept. 22

Posted September 19, 2025

Starting Sept. 22, Xcel Energy will be closing a portion of 5th Street in front of the Government Center for a utility project. The sidewalk in front of the Government Center will remain open and visitors will continue to use the building’s accessible main entrance located on 5th Street.

Visitors to the Government Center will not be able to park in front of the building during the road closure. The County will reserve a parking lot directly behind the building as public visitor parking. Motorists can access the visitor lot from either West Avenue or East Avenue using the alley directly behind the Government Center. Disability parking spaces will be temporarily installed on West Avenue by the intersection with 5th Street, nearest the building entrance. An off-street disability parking stall will also be designated in the temporary visitor lot.

Building access will remain unchanged during the closure. Visitors must enter the Government Center using the 5th street entrance. The alley entrance to the building is for employees only.

The Goodhue County Government Center is in the former courthouse and is home to county services including the Veteran Services, Passport office, Surveyor/GIS, Land Use Management, Vital Records, County Recorder, Finance & Taxpayer Services, Elections, Human Resources and Administration. The County Boardroom is also located on the third floor of the Government Center building.

This street closure is related to utility updates and will continue until work is complete, which is expected to be the end of October.
